As Californians cope with the trauma and massive destruction from the wildfires, more than 400 American Red Cross workers are helping to ensure no one faces this heartbreaking time alone. They are working closely with their partners to provide food, shelter, emotional support and other critical aid. A week after the fires first sparked, as many as 92,000 people are still under mandatory evacuation orders.

Fears are growing across America and China as the threat of a new pandemic has risen, with the Midwest becoming a potential hotspot for the virus. The CDC conducted human metapneumovirus (hMPV) tests and found that 2.2% of the tests came back positive, up from the previous week's 1.77%. In China, scenes are similar to those at the beginning of COVID-19, with long lines out of medical facilities going viral on social media.

A new deadly disease that usually infects animals is beginning to spread across America. According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases of tularemia, also known as "rabbit fever," are on the rise in the U.S. The disease commonly infects rabbits, hares and rodents and is caused by the bacteria Francisella tularensis. The disease is defined as zoonotic, which means it can spread between animals to humans.

New findings from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative suggest that infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, may be associated with an increase in the number of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) cases. According to the results, 4.5% post-COVID-19 participants met ME/CFS diagnostic criteria, compared to 0.6% participants that had not been infected by SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Winter viruses are raging right now, with flu leading the way at extremely high levels in the West, across the Midwest and deep into the Southeast, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Jan. 13. Flu-related hospitalizations and deaths are on the rise, and experts predict there’s much more to come. Flu A strains are currently dominant, especially H3N2 and H1N1. While adults 65 and older are most likely to be hospitalized with the flu, the viruses that are circulating are hitting all age groups.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Department of Homeland Security are warning that a copycat terrorist attack could occur similar to the New Year’s Day New Orleans attack. The public service announcement urges Americans to remain vigilant and for those living overseas who encounter kidnapping or hostage situations to call a toll-free number or fill out an online form.

On Jan. 15, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it's banning the use of Red No. 3, a synthetic dye that gives food and drinks their bright red cherry color but has been linked to cancer in animals. The dye is still used in thousands of foods, including candy, cereals, cherries in fruit cocktails and strawberry-flavored milkshakes, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a food safety advocacy group that petitioned the agency in 2022 to end its use.
